The fresh-faced 20-year-old looks incredibly innocent there’s no indication that within a year he’ll reinvent the Greenwich Village folk scene, or go on to blur forever the line between poetry and songwriting. In No Direction Home, director Martin Scorsese digs up early home-movie footage of Dylan clowning like Chaplin. When Bob Dylan hit the snowy streets of New York in the winter of 1961, it seemed cameras were waiting for him, as if there’d been news of his coming. "real" somehow back in 1978 compared to 1985.Music documentaries can do two things (or some combination of the two): over-inflate the mythical nature of music’s most interesting stories, or shed a light on important truths about the music that has shaped our world, straight from the mouths of people who made it or who were in their inner circles. Brothers in Arms was a huge record for them, and while I do like it (Why Worry is gorgeous), I prefer the 1st record, music seemed to be a bit more. I like the other albums too, "Lady Writer", "Angel of Mercy", and "Portobello Belle" on the 2nd album are very good, and Making Movies is also a strong record. I'm not int the Van-Halen type stuff that was becoming popular back then, I was more into Mark Knopfler's elegant guitar tone and the band's more mature sound. Saw them at the Palladium in '79 with my brother, a great show that was. It brings me back to 1978 whenever I hear it (age 14 at the time, turn 40 tomorrow). "Down to the Waterline", "Water of Love", "Wild West End", "Sultans of Swing"- just great songs! Even the white album cover- very classy. Its simply fantastic from start to finish and if its ever possible to wear out a cd, then I'll probably wear this one out since I have played it so often w/o ever tiring of hearing it. I feel the very 1st Dire Straits album is the best one. A much stronger album than many give it credit, On every street has some wonderful songs and has been a quiet pleasure of mine since I discovered it.īut as you already like Dire Straits, I'd say buy them all. On every street I didn't even know that this 1991 album existed until 18 months ago - even though it had hit #1 on the New Zealand charts, as I later discovered. Initially great, several people I know found that the attractions of this album diminished over time. Love over gold was used by Philips to help introduce the new CD format!īrothers in arms Probably their best selling album, this contains the big hit Money for nothing.
I've always thought that the opening track, Telegraph Road was very "American" while Industrial disease is very British. Five songs over 43 minutes may sound a recipe for disaster, but it works well. Love over goldA different approach from Knopfler, stretching out some songs and adding keyboards. This is one of my favourites, simply because of my age when it came out and its place in my life, but not as strong an album as the first. Some very strong songs (expecially side one of the vinyl: Tunnel of love, Romeo and Juliet, Skateaway). Making movies "Victory snatched from the jaws of defeat" was how one review described this album compared to Communique. I guess that spendinging all your time on the road, couple with record company pressure for a follow up, can do that to a songwriter. Many Straits fans will argue that this is their best album.Ĭommunique A big let down when it came out and, to my mind, their least inspired album.
This album is full of great songs which still stand up today. Based on traditional blues-based rock, the album appealed to those who found a lot of rock music bloated and couldn't find much to appeal in the UK punk scene. I suspect that the answers you get about the best albums will differ depending on where the person writing is from and how big an event each album played in their lives.Īs someone who lived through the whole Dire Straits phenomenom, here's my take on their albums:ĭire Straits Their first album was a breath of fresh air in 1978. Here in New Zealand it was different: they were huge from the beginning. I understand that Dire Starits didn't really break in the USA until they had released several albums.
